Developing Distress: the Power Threat Meaning Framework

5 February @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Research Seminar by Professor John Cromby, Professor of Psychology, University of Leicester

Abstract
The mental health consequences of the traumas and adversities experienced by displaced children are typically understood in terms of psychiatric illnesses. In 2018 the British Psychological Society’s Division of Clinical Psychology published the ‘Power Threat Meaning Framework’ (PTMF) as an alternative to functional psychiatric diagnosis. This talk will explain why PTMF was needed, summarise its elements, explain how it conceptualizes distress, and describe how it includes the effects of early adverse experiences, such as the traumas associated with displacement, without resorting to notions of disorder or illness.
